Annika Nuttall

Annika Nuttall is the founder and director of Annika Nuttall Gallery in Aarhus. With a background in art history and years of experience in the contemporary art world, she established her own gallery in 2020. Here she works closely with both established and emerging artists, driven by a belief in dialogue, trust, and long-term collaboration.

For Annika, the gallery is more than an exhibition space – it’s a platform and a community. Her vision is to create a place where contemporary art reaches a wider audience and connects people across cultures and perspectives.

What was your first encounter with the art world – and what led you to open your own gallery?

I remember visiting Louisiana when I was around sixteen or seventeen. I saw a series of portraits that stayed with me. One of them had a piece of paper taped over the mouth and redrawn. That small, decisive gesture — the artist’s insistence on getting it right, made a deep impression on me.

Later, I studied art history and worked at ARoS and a gallery in Aarhus. It was during those years I realised how much I was drawn to the close collaboration with artists — and to being part of the moment where art meets the world.

What makes you feel powerful in your everyday life?

I feel most powerful when the gallery is alive, when exhibitions come together and I can sense the energy between people, artworks and ideas. That movement and connection give me a deep sense of purpose.

Power also comes from presence. From standing calmly in what I do while leaving space for energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes it is as simple as putting on a blazer. Not as a shield, but as a quiet reminder that I am stepping into my professional space with focus and strength.

That balance between elegance and confidence feels very similar to the Herskind woman—grounded, ambitious and unapologetically herself.

In the end, it is about creating your own voice and platform. If I have an advantage, it might be the ability to navigate uncertainty with strength, flexibility and empathy.

How would you describe your personal style in three words?

Simple, timeless and intentional.

Can fashion be a form of artistic expression for you?

Absolutely. Fashion, like art, is a visual language that tells stories, expresses moods and reflects identity. Both are about form, material and context, but also about attitude and awareness.

I see fashion as an extension of personality. It is not about following trends, but about expressing something genuine and rooted. In that sense, it is very close to how I approach art. Both are reflections of how we see and move through the world.

If you could give one piece of advice to women who dream of starting their own gallery or working in art, what would it be?

My advice is simple: trust your own voice, even when it trembles. There is no formula and no one will give you permission. You have to claim the space yourself—with courage, conviction and your own sense of beauty.
